With the World Men's Curling Championship and the UEFA European League Cup final, Basel will be hosting two extraordinary top championships in 2016 - in addition to the international events held here every year. As stated by the city's Presidential Administrative Department in a press release, both major events will focus media attention on Basel, and promise to add value to local businesses in the tourism, gastronomy and retail sectors. Basel is the official host city for both events.
Organising Committee President Bruno Schallberger adds: "On the basis of positive experiences with Basel as an event venue, the World Curling Federation has chosen to hold the World Championships six years earlier than originally planned in the Curling Mecca Basel."
The Swiss team for the World Men's Curling Championship 2016 has trained intensively for this major challenge in front of a home crowd. Skip Sven Michel and his team from Adelboden and Bern are "well prepared, totally motivated and positive. We are ready for the World Championships in Basel."
Skip Sven Michel adds: "We know the World Championships in our home country could place us under additional pressure, but we hope the Swiss supporters and the atmosphere in the St. Jakobs-Arena will be an inspiration - with the right encouragement and backing from the fans."
